J & S Computers PcLinuxOs Final Review
By Jake Julian; June 28, 2007
Congratulations! You've just found your new linux Operating System. PcLinuxOs
Final is here! A few months back I didn't know what it was. I barely knew
what Linux was a few years ago. After beta testing Microsoft's new all "bells
and whistles" operating system 'Vista, last summer I went looking for something
else, anything else. I wanted something to offer my customers that was both
stable, and would give them an "ease of use" without having to learn command
level operation skills. Something more stable and secure than Windows! An
OS that windows users could easily transition over to Linux with. And something
that didn't mean upgrading every freaking piece of hardware in my shop, as
well!
I had googled 'Linux' a few months back and found out about live CD's.
Operating systems so small you can "burn them" to a cd and boot them without
changing anything on your hard drive. I had great deal of fun experimenting
with tons of different distros. Ubuntu, Slax, DSL, Puppy, Tiny Linux, Backtrack
,and on and on and on ... A few didn't like my hardware while others were
a little too bare or simplistic for my taste. Then I came across PcLinuxOS.
Man what a "Polished Look". This O.S. not only worked straight out of the
box but it looked beautiful as well. And for a fleeing windows refugee everything
seemed to be in order and in its proper place.
I experimented with the livecd for a few days then I dived in and installed
it onto my own personal P.C. Less then 25 minutes later I had a system that
dual booted PcLinuxOS/WindowsXP Pro. I like this setup because it allows
new Linux users the ability to transition slowly into Linux, and when they
feel ready they can delete their windows partition, and go soley with PCLinuxOS.
Next I installed it on 3 more different test machines in our shop which went
without a hitch on all 3! I have previously installed other Linux O.S.s for
our customers, (Linspire,Ubunbtu,Kubuntu, etc.) and experienced several hardware
compatability issues, but NOT SO with PcLinuxOS to this point. Every time
I've installed some form of linux, there have been some driver issues that
had me pulling my hair out. I tested Dell Inspiron 6000 based on a thread
over on the ubuntu forums saying everything worked out of the box. As usual
it didn't, there was an issue with the wireles driver. Bottom line, when
I loaded PClinux OS everything worked, even when it's wifi driver proved
to be incompatible PCLOS installed the NDIS wrapper which did allow use of
the windows driver automatically. A very nice result by linux definitely.
For all you freaks who like to tweak, it's easy to customize the working
desktop or filesystem and then you can reburn the iso as a live /installable
version. How sweet is that? and by the way the free wallpaper downlaods are
freakin' coool! There are just too many nice built-ins to mention here.
I'm converted. I have been running the final version on my personal pc
for several weeks without so as much as a hiccup! It has serious customization
abilities, no hardware issues, at least not on mine anyways! It does all
the basic email, web browsing basic gaming, office functions and has some
pretty good selections of software (well over 5,000) through it's repository.
I find it to be a simple out of the box solution. This is after trying out
several different Linux flavors. It's a great entry level Linus O.S. for
beginners. I think at least for me it's finally "bye bye" Microsoft!
I'm very pleased with PCLOS. It has full, out of the box support of
Beryl/compiz (3D enviroment), the usual software packages installed - maybe
this could do with some work. Java installed etc. Basically I think it takes
the hassle out of the switch over from Microsoft. You've got a stable environment
that works so that you can then go and break it and see how you broke it.
And you always have the live cd to install again. In conclusion, I would
have to give PcLinuxOS 9 0f 10, and the boyz at Redmond had best wake up
and pay attention because this O.S. shows that Linux has certainly "Come
Of Age". Texstar, you and your team have done a tremendous job and congrats
goes to all your folks for building this obviously superior operating system!
In closing, if you haven't tried it yet, get the heck on over to
PCLinux.Com, download PcLinuxOS, and
give it a try! Then thank them later by making a donation to further their
great work! ...happy computing, Jake!
P.S The donation idea is my idea solely and I am not associated with the
folks at PCLinux.Com in any way! I
just think they do great work and deserve to be supported ...Period.
