Business Edition
Linux ... now
available!
Small Business Linux for the Small Business
Professional
Welcome to Business Edition Linux.
While Business Edition Linux is based on PCLinuxOS, we are not an "official"
part of the PCLinuxOS distro. Our goal to offer the very best in solutions
for small business/SOHO needs targeted toward the small/mid-sized business
"layperson".
They offer a Desktop solution that is primarily geared to the SOHO, one
man shop/business where everything can be done right on your one machine.
There are all the business oriented applications you could want, from word
processing to graphics production, making bar code labels to spreadsheets
and databases. It's right there at your command.
Also available for small business is the Business Edition Linux Server
solution. It offers a layman's basic approach to setting up most of the small
servers and networking functions you might need for your small business or
home office. This server is recommended for businesses with a smaller number
of machines on their network.
Both SOHO and Server are made with working together in mind. SOHO is a
great "client" for connecting to the many server and networking functions
available on the BEL Server.

F.A.Q.s
This list of questions and answers will be modified as needed to help
answer basic questions about using BEL Project servers, and desktops.
General
Q: What do the names refer to when discussing BEL Project releases?
A: "BEL" stands for Business Edition Linux, this is the name of the project
team that does the work to make the releases. The names of the releases are
Server Basic KDE (SBK); Server Basic Xfce (SBX); Basic Office KDE ( BOK);
Basic Office Xfce (BOX) and X Home.
Q: Where can I get help using a BEL Project release/ISO?
A: You can search the forums at BEL Forum and post questions if your question
isn't answered in a search. You can search this Wiki site, there are several
How To's and informative articles written by and for and with the "new" IT
admin" in mind. Also, you can visit the BEL Project IRC Channel, "#belsolution"
any time. There is often at least one of the team members available there
to steer folks in the right direction. All we ask if you find a solution
at IRC is that you post the situation and solution at the BEL Forum afterward
for all users to benefit from.
Q: Can I get help with an issue I am having using a BEL Project release
at the PCLinuxOS forums?
A: It is not usually recommended. There are several changes that have
been made to BEL Project releases that put it out of the scope of the "main"
PCLinuxOS ability to provide support on. There are areas that being the same
from the "Main" PCLinuxOS distribution you caould ask about specifically,
such as looking for help regarding the Control Panel, etc.
It is ALWAYS recommended to start with the BEL Forums, Wiki and IRC to
resolve issues with BEL Project
releases.
Q: How can I make a donation to help support the BEL Project?
A: BEL Project does not accept direct donations. We often recommend that
if you want to make a donation you can go straight to PCLinuxOS and make
a donation there, tell them we sent you. We do receive some proceeds from
sales of BEL Project releases at On-Disk. A disk from On-Disk works as a
great "Master" disk to make your own customization or duplicates from.
Servers
Q: What environment are BEL Project Servers Server Basic KDE and Server
Basic Xfce best used in?
A: Server Basic KDE is a full featured multi server that has been targeted
at the small to medium small business and SOHO environments. It offers a
variety of well known and established web server apps and Network infrastructure
apps to make the most of existing equipment in small to mid size businesses.
Server Basic Xfce has been targeted to SOHO environments and home networks
that may be using equipment with less robust hardware, thus getting the best
results from using a lightweight WM like Xfce. SBX offers fewer web server
apps at the initial install but is fully able to provide LAN
infrastructure.
Q: Why are certain apps included and others not?
A: The BEL Project Server Team wants to make the servers as productive
"Out of the Box" as possible. However, due to the wide variety of businesses
and environments that the BEL Severs can be applied in, it's hard to customize
it to only one group or area. Admins and business managers want to be productive
but they also want to have a server/system to be as specific as possible
to their business/LAN/WAN. We take the Servers to a certain point, making
them as usable as possible yet still as customizable as needed.
Q: Who are the Servers made to be used by?
A: The Servers are intended to fill a niche in the Small Business/SOHO
market. All the apps and configurations have been done to make using Linux
as a server for the small business person with a smaller IT budget to be
able to be productive while they learn how to implement these tools. Having
said that, nothing can replace someone taking initiative and doing their
homework. We can provide the tools and maybe give you a head start, but it
is still up to the person implementing a BEL server to learn as much as they
can to make it work the way they want it to. Having said all that, once you
download and install a BEL Project Server, it is your server. You are in
control and can do with it as you please. We will try to provide suggestions
and help if you want it, but you call the shots on your server.
Q: Can or should I update my server from the repo?
A: If you are using Server Basic KDE (SBK) you should be able to update
it when ever you like from the repo with no ill effect, providing of course,
that there are no buggy surprises in an updated package, which we at BEL
Project have no control over the PCLinuxOS repositories. If you are using
Server Basic Xfce (SBX) it is best to follow the "How To Update" in the BEL
Wiki on doing updates. The main PCLinuxOS packages are predominately done
with KDE in mind, therefore, there will be occasions when an update might
go awry on an Xfce based server.
Q: Can I add new packages or apps to my BEL Server?
A: You can add any apps you choose, as stated above, it is your server.
We don't care what you do with it. Keep in mind however, the we will only
offer assistance with apps and tools that came installed as part of our official
release. There is still an opportunity to get help in the BEL Forums in the
Experimental section or in the IRC channel #belsolution.
Desktops
Q: Why does BEL Project offer user desktops?
A: BEL Project is about offering small business solutions. These are not
just limited to Servers. Many small businesses prefer to install user desktops
that do not include games and apps that might not be considered productive
or conducive to a work environment. As a result, again because of the great
variety of environments, BEL Project offers PCLinuxOS MiniMe 2008 as a KDE
based "footing" that businesses can customize to their needs and Mini-X which
is the Xfce equivalent to MiniMe, done by our Desktop Team.
